Hiking Trails in the Hohe Tauern National Park Region

Wanderwege Nationalpark Hohe Tauern RegionOn the Sunny Side

Between Zillertal and Zell am See the grassy Kitzbueheler Alps are located, including Europe’s highest grassy mountain > the Geissstein (2,363m). Beautiful mountain hiking trails between 1,000 and 2,000m await you here – with a constant beautiful view down to the valleys of the national park.

Several ascension aids make the ascension easier (Schmittenhoehe Zell am See, Panoramic Cable Car Kitzbueheler Alps, Wildkogel, Neukirchen Kitzbueheler Hornbahn…). On the Resterkogel a new panoramic cable car is stationed in Hollersbach. As the name suggests, you will have a wonderful panorama to the 3000m mountains of the Hohe Tauern National Park.

Unspoiled nature in Europe’s last natural sanctuary – the Hohe Tauern National Park
with countless lakes, glaciers, mountain pastures and waterfalls. Enjoy the wonders of nature. All tributary valleys of the Hohe Tauern National Park are car-free, so you can go on an undisturbed hiking or mountain-biking tour. However, if you want to “reach high” you can also ease your way using a national park taxi.

Habach valley geology trail

The geo-trail starts at the carpark, at the Habach defile, which is located at the entrance to the Habach valley, and leads up beyond the Moar alpine pasture. Presentation boards provide full information, explaining everything  from the Hohe Tauern’s developmental history to the microscopic structures of the rocks. The Habich valley is renowned far beyond the borders of Austrian for its world-famous emerald deposits.

Glacier nature trail in the Upper Sulzbach Valley

An extremely interesting nature trail at the mouth of the Upper Sulzbach glacier; features include: the various stages of the glacier’s retreat since 1850; distinctive moraines and areas of glacial polishing; colonisation of debris by pioneer plants. The glacier footpath provides a terrific view of the Grossvenediger’s Western face, and of the glacier-formed Trog valley, with the Upper Sulzbach brook. You can even see the Western Kitzbuehl Alps.
There are 20 separate stopping places on the glacier footpath, which are numbered and described in the accompanying booklet, “The Glacier Footpath in the Upper Sulzbach Valley" nature guide.

Lake Hintersee nature trail

The basin at the end of the Felber valley is dominated  by the Hintersee lake, which was created by a rock slide in 1495. On its Northern bank there is a nature trail furnished with 10 information boards, explaining the natural-history features of this portion of the valley. The circular path leads the visitors past spruces knocked over by the wind and down to the lakeside. Now the footpath ascends slightly, leading to a scree mound left by the rock slide already mentioned. It is now used as an alpine meadow. For the way back you can choose between two routes: the shorter path leads directly to the car park, the longer one goes via the Meiling alpine pasture, where snacks are available.

Krimml Waterfalls - circular footpath

This walking-tour takes you alongside the highest waterfalls in Central Europe. Rising to a total height of 380 metres, the Krimml Waterfalls were awarded the European Nature Conservation Diploma as early as 1966. Their banks provide a  home of a huge number of moisture-loving plants, such as mosses and ferns.

The Uttendorf butterfly nature trail

This nature trail starts in the village centre, where you take the village stream road. Then, following the information boards, it leads up to the sunny hillside of Uttendorf. The boards describe the butterflies’ emergence and decline, their lives and the benefits they bring. On this footpath there are plenty of opportunities to stop for a bite to eat and a rest.
