Almabtrieb in the Alps

As autumn arrives, it’s time for one of the most picturesque traditions in the Alps: the Almabtrieb, or Alpine cattle drive. Festively decorated cows make their way through the villages, returning from the mountain pastures to the valley below.

Our own Pinzgau cows – affectionately known as our Pinzgauer girls – are safely back home as well, bringing with them the spirit and energy of a summer spent high in the mountains.

The Importance of Alpine Pastures

The alpine pastures — known locally as Almen — play an essential role throughout the Alps. They provide abundant grazing lands for livestock, ensuring a reliable food supply during the summer months while allowing farmers to harvest hay in the valleys for the winter season.

By grazing on these high mountain meadows, the animals also help prevent the natural reforestation of the slopes — preserving open landscapes that bloom with a stunning variety of alpine flowers and rich biodiversity.

These unique pastures are a defining feature of the cultural landscape of the Alps. They not only sustain traditional mountain farming but also offer countless opportunities for recreation and relaxation. Many hiking trails, mountain bike routes, and more than half of all ski slopes are found on these cherished alpine pastures.

The Traditional "Almabtrieb"

The Almabtrieb is a cherished tradition that has been celebrated in Alpine villages for centuries. When a summer passes without illness or misfortune among people or animals, it is seen as a blessing — and gratitude is expressed with a colorful celebration known as the Almabtrieb, or Alpine cattle drive.

As a sign of thanks for a safe and fruitful summer in the mountains, the cows are adorned with bright decorations: jingling bells, colorful ribbons, small juniper trees decorated with crepe paper flowers, and intricately woven natural wreaths made of fresh blooms.

Proudly wearing their festive headpieces, the cows make their dignified descent from the high pastures to the valley below — where clean stables and lush green meadows await them. The event is often accompanied by music, folk celebrations, and delicious regional specialties, turning this day into a true highlight of Alpine culture.

Our Pinzgauer girls are home again!

After a wonderful summer on the alpine pastures, our cows have made their way safely back to Sonnberghof. Now they’re enjoying the fresh, juicy grass of our meadows — a well-earned rest after months in the high mountains.
We’re thankful for a peaceful, accident-free season and so happy to have them home again.
