Herbal Wisdom from Sonnberghof – Our Treatments

As autumn arrives at Sonnberghof, it’s time to focus on the power of roots.

Our host, Christine Riedlsberger, shares her deep herbal wisdom and reveals the natural strength found in plants like horseradish, angelica, dandelion, and many more.

The Power of Roots

In autumn, our focus at Sonnberghof turns to what lies beneath the surface — the hidden world of roots. While in spring the life force of plants flows into leaves, blossoms, and seeds, by mid-August it begins its gentle retreat back into the earth. That’s why September and October are the perfect time to harvest roots — when they are brimming with energy and potent healing properties.

After harvesting, the roots are carefully washed, cut, and either dried or turned into a herbal tincture. To make one, we fill a glass jar one-third full with finely chopped roots, then top it with two-thirds alcohol. The mixture is left to steep for at least 30 days — a full lunar cycle — allowing all valuable, alcohol-soluble active ingredients to unfold their strength.

Roots remind us:
The most important things grow in silence.

Nature’s Hidden Helpers for the Winter Season:

  • Horseradish root has powerful antiviral, antiseptic, and antifungal properties. In tincture form, it supports the immune system, helps clear mucus, and eases coughs.
  • Angelica root (Angelica archangelica) is known for its digestive benefits. Its natural bitters stimulate the production of digestive juices, support the liver, and are often used in herbal tinctures and traditional liqueurs.
  • Teasel root is valued as a potent aid against bacterial infections, particularly Lyme disease.
  • Clove root surprises with its distinctive aroma – reminiscent of a visit to the dentist. Rich in bitters and tannins, it offers pain-relieving properties and can even help soothe toothaches.
  • Dandelion root is packed with bitters that help cleanse and support the liver, making it ideal for a gentle detox in spring or autumn.
  • Valerian root calms the nerves and promotes restful sleep — whether as a tea or tincture, despite its characteristically strong, bitter taste.

All these treasures reveal just how much healing power lies hidden beneath the surface.
For our host Christine Riedlsberger, roots are a symbol of what truly matters — a reminder that the essentials of life often remain unseen, and that nature offers exactly what we need in every season.
