Enjoy the Healing Power of Sauna in the Heart of Nature
Sauna bathing amidst this breathtaking Alpine scenery not only promotes physical health but also nurtures the soul. The word sauna comes from Finnish and literally means “sweat room.” Yet, the practice of bathing in hot air didn’t actually originate in Scandinavia. Its roots go back over 1,500 years to northern East Asia, where farmers would retreat into warm-air rooms after a day’s work to relax and recover. The Finns, however, perfected and refined this tradition — and today, the sauna has become an essential part of wellness culture around the world.
At Naturhotel Gut Sonnberghof, our panoramic lake sauna offers a truly unique experience: warmth, stillness, and an open view of the majestic mountains — a harmony that brings deep relaxation and renewal.
The Health Benefits of Sauna Bathing
Regular sauna sessions provide numerous health benefits. Here are the eight most important ones:
1. Strengthens the cardiovascular system
The high temperatures in the sauna improve circulation and gently train the heart. Regular sessions help strengthen both heart and blood vessels.
2. Detoxifies through sweating
As your body sweats, toxins are released. Dilated blood vessels and open pores support a deep cleansing of skin and tissue.
3. Improves the skin’s appearance
Frequent sauna bathing refines the skin’s texture, especially for conditions like eczema or psoriasis. Afterward, be sure to replenish your skin with plenty of moisture.
4. Boosts the immune system
The alternation between heat and cold stimulates the production of immune cells — a natural way to prevent colds and strengthen your defenses.
5. Regulates blood pressure
Sauna heat relaxes and expands the blood vessels, helping to lower blood pressure and enhance long-term circulation.
6. Supports easier breathing
The humid warmth of the sauna and steam bath opens the airways — especially beneficial for those with respiratory sensitivities.
7. Promotes longevity
Studies show that regular sauna bathing can extend life expectancy by reducing cardiovascular risks and supporting overall well-being.
8. Encourages relaxation and detoxification
Sauna heat activates metabolism, releases tension, and restores balance to body and mind — leaving you with a sense of lightness and renewal.
Sauna Etiquette & Tips
Hydration
Drink plenty of water before, during, and after your sauna session to stay well hydrated.
Cooling down
After your sauna, take a refreshing dip in our natural swimming pond — it invigorates circulation and boosts immunity. Please remember to shower first!
Rest & recovery
After each sauna session, allow yourself at least 20 minutes of rest to let your body fully regenerate.
Sauna Etiquette – The Sonnberghof Way
For everyone’s comfort, please shower thoroughly before entering the sauna and always enter it dry and without swimwear.
Close the door quickly to maintain the temperature, and speak quietly — if at all. Place a towel beneath you on the wooden bench, and be mindful of others’ personal space.
Even if your neighbor’s tattoo of a tropical bird catches your eye — remember, the sauna is for relaxation, not observation.
In the steam bath, rinse your seat with the hose before and after use. After both sauna and steam bath, shower again before cooling off in the natural swimming pond.
This keeps the water clean — and your fellow wellness guests happy!
In short:
At Gut Sonnberghof, sauna bathing isn’t just a wellness ritual — it’s a way to connect body, mind, and nature.
Breathe deeply, sweat freely, and let the Alpine calm restore your inner balance.
